ABOUT
HELLO, I’M DR LISA TWILLING

I’m a Bay Area General Psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working with a diversity of clients who have a variety of needs and concerns. In addition, I have a particular interest in Medical Psychology – the application of psychology (or psychological principles) to medical illnesses.
Medical Psychology can be beneficial for a variety of issues, which can include: cancer, cardiac disease, neurological disorders, hypertension, chronic pain and other acute and/or chronic medical illnesses. Individuals with medical illnesses often experience depression, anxiety, high rates of stress, and overall lower degrees of happiness and life satisfaction—it is here that my training and experience can help clients with these issues improve their life quality.
I also work with caregivers who assist individuals with medical illnesses. These individuals often cope with the strain and trauma of helping a loved one who is suffering. It can be painful and stressful to support a loved one through a diagnosis like cancer or chronic pain, but with the right support, these caregivers can find balance and peace within their role.
MY PHILOSOPHY
I believe people choose psychotherapy because they want to do something about an uncomfortable or dissatisfying life situation.
Psychotherapy is an active and effective way to make changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. People who choose psychotherapy experience improved emotional wellbeing, more satisfying relationships, and more positive emotions.
MY APPROACH
My approach to psychotherapy involves helping clients identify and create achievable expectations and goals.
Psychological health is often defined as mental flexibility. Using Cognitive-behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness-based approaches, and Acceptance And Commitment (ACT) principles. I develop a treatment plan that leads to meaningful progress and positive change.
My work is integrative, non-judgmental, and empathic. Through observation, data-gathering, and questioning, I will work with you to understand your values and needs and to help you reach your personal goals and aspirations.
